Keys to Calming the Fussy Baby (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (May, 1991)
Author: William Sears
Average review score:

to understand why baby cries, helps with the stress of it
Why is my baby crying? It gets scary and frustrating, especially for a new parent. There are many thousands of reasons, but this book helped me to understand why my baby is the way she is and what she might need. I am fully behind Dr. and Mrs. Sears in their attachment parenting. Too often, we listen to and are even advised to listen to past generations of parenting skills. While this might be just what you need some times, there's a better view in these books. Past generations "tell it the way it is" as if there just is no other way, and I say "THERE IS A BETTER WAY!"

While there are things that are recommended in this book that may not work for you, or fit in with your way of thinking, most will probably help considerably. Some of you may be put off by the idea of "sharing the family bed" for instance. While my husband and I didn't need to do this, I can see how it would be very beneficial for some poor mom (and/or dad) that needs to be feeding her baby every 2 hours! Society shouldn't frown on that!

The Sears' teach bonding with and therefore understanding your child and their needs. Without this bond, as so many have missed out on unwillingly, parenting is much more difficult and stressful.

This is a terrific book for you to read while you are in third term of pregnancy, a current parent, and a great gift for soon to be parent.

If you try their techniques for an area you have a need in, you will see that it does "feel right". Don't let yourself feel guilty for not being able to do everything they suggest, just use this book as a guide of understanding an alternative style of great parenting, a mindset.

May be dated, but a useful primer
This is an excellent book to get a good overview of what mutual funds are and why they are such a good investment vehicle for many people. Written in a lively, engaging style, it lays out in brief chapters essential concepts in easy-to-understand language. While it is now dated, it is still a great place to start.

Recommended for anyone with a hearing loss
This book is written so anyone can understand the issues associated with a hearing loss. The book would be helpful for an indvidual to understand his/her own social and emotional problems of having a hearing loss or the problems of someone they love or work with. The book is short and can be read quickly as is oganized in two page chapters dealing with specific subjects relating to hard of hearing problems. It also makes a good reference book for personal and public libaries.

Keys to Parenting an Adopted Child (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (January, 1996)
Author: Kathy Lancaster

Down-to-earth advice (at a great price!)
The bargain pricetag notwithstanding, this is one of the best parenting books I've ever read. It's concise but comprehensive, covering domestic and international adoption issues, special needs topics, open adoption, and a host of other important matters related to building happy, healthy adoptive families. I found the material on interracial and international adoption issues to be among the book's strongest features; the author offers great advice for sensitively answering kids' questions, straightforwardly dealing with nosy strangers, and maximizing the joy of being a multicultural family. An excellent resource.

Very Pleased
I have a 15 1/2 year old daughter living at home and a 20 1/2 year old who has moved out. This book is very helpful and very specific to specific issues. Each child is different but this gives you useful information to be used on different kinds of young people. The book is realistic and helpful.
Children don't come with a manual and this book is like having a manual. I have recommended it to several of my friends.
Great book!

Keys to Successful Stepfathering (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (January, 1997)
Author: Carl E. Pickhardt
Average review score:

Well thought out and complete. Most helpful!
Pickhardt shares his years of experience as a psychologist and offers a very useful resource for step fathers and bio-fathers for understanding the multiple changes that affect step families. Issues of multiple alliances, boundaries, even gender differences about step fathers relating to step sons and step daughters, and more are all included in this book which helps normalize the process of step family development. He is very accurate in his description of the developmental process of step-family development, estimating a minimum of 2 years for step families to come together as a working unit. Highly recommended.
